MANUAL CINEMA combines handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic motifs, and live sound manipulation to create immersive theatrical stories. Using overhead projectors, paper puppets, actors in silhouette, and a live band, Manual Cinema transforms the experience of attending the cinema and imbues it with liveness, ingenuity, and theatricality.
Manual Cinema was founded in 2010 by five Chicago artists with diverse backgrounds in theater, visual arts, and music. In their first two years of spectacle-making, they have created two feature-length, live-scored cinematic shadow puppet shows, Ada/Ava and Lula del Ray; a large-scale installation piece for the University of Chicago; FJORDS, a feature-length collaboration with the string quartet Chicago Q Ensemble based on the poems of Zachary Schomburg; and Meanwhile, a music video commissioned by contemporary music ensemble eighth blackbird.
Manual Cinema’s work has been performed in Chicago at the MCA, Links Hall, the Poetry Foundation, the Hideout, and the Charnel House, in addition to various bars and found spaces around the city. Nationally they have performed at the NYC Fringe Festival, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Eric Carle Museum, St. Marks NYC, and the Tank NYC. Their work has been commissioned by the Logan Square Arts Center, the University of Chicago, and eighth blackbird.
Manual Cinema was ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago in the Theater and Performance Studies program in the fall of 2012, where they taught as adjunct faculty. In 2013 Manual Cinema has held residencies and taught workshops at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago, The Future of Storytelling Conference, NYC, RCAH at Michigan State University, and Puppeteers of America: Puppet Festival (R)evolution in Swarthmore, PA.
Lonnie Edwards began his ascension into the stratosphere a little over a year ago with the launch of his Chicago based clothing line "bear.illa", which continues to grow rapidly in popularity nationwide. With a company motto that includes such phrases as, "working to amalgamate society", you would be correct to assume Mr. Edwards has been involved heavily in several projects aiming towards universal cohesiveness. Such as "Paint Wars", a North American art tour that consists of artists in different regions competing for a prize. Created in 2010 in collaboration with American Contemporary artist Scott Helbach, the tour has gained rave reviews nationally and brought artists of all types together in several cities throughout the US and Canada. As a modern day renaissance man, Lonnie Edwards has a hand in several other ventures as well. A self taught playwright and screenwriter, he has co-written several plays, has a graphic novel called "Angst" set to released soon. He has also been immersed in activism since the age of 19, taking part in political demonstrations and meetings with US representatives nationwide for equality of all kinds.

Latvian born and Chicago-bred, Kat V has been re-defining the classical violinist image with the help of some strings and needles. “I like seeing people respond to music. Music is such a subconscious feeling…a language. Words can’t express certain feelings the way music does, so to play a few notes and get that emotion out of a human being is exceptional. In classical concerts, there is no interaction or response from the audience until the very end of a performance, however during my sets, I feel instant response from the audience. If they love what they hear, I know it!” says Kat. Her inspiration to change the way people experience classical instruments started when she came to the United States from Latvia at the age of 16. In Chicago, Kat was exposed to the world of house, hip-hop and experimental music. Her curiosity (and frequent appearance) in the Chicago nightclub and DJ scene opened up a new outlets and possibilities of musical expression. “I was always intrigued by the concept of live music collaborations and dreamed about performing with DJ’s. DJ’s are all about the feeling and communication with the audience, during my performances my goal is to connect with each listener and make sure they have an unforgettable musical experience,” says Kat. It comes as no surprise that Kat since has become a sought after DJ, her style is a blend of audience inspired favorites and the best new relevant music that Kat believes audiences must hear.
Kat has been a featured performer at the Art Institute of Chicago, Challenge Aspen, Chicago Ideas Week, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Christie’s, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Escobar Aspen, The Glint San Francisco, the Italian Chamber of Commerce, Lincoln Hall Chicago, the Little Nell Aspen, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Macy’s, Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, Neiman Marcus, Norman’s Cay NYC, North Coast Music Festival, New Orleans Evacuteer, the Posse Foundation, Service Club of Chicago, Starwood Resorts, Schubas Chicago, TEDx, the United States Ski and Snowboard Association, Veuve Clicquot, and Vogue.
In 2013 Kat joined Bonafyde Record Label and released her debut solo EP OPUS ONE available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify. Her follow up original release will be available in April 2015.

Grood is the original purveyor of Chicago strangefunk. This is a hefty and cryptic title, and Grood strongly suggests you just listen to the music, but here are some words to describe the music anyways: dark dance rock, amoeba love songs, warm-up fast jam, bread and butter. Its creative, fresh, and vigorous, just like soap. The two main creators: Charlie Otto and Kasey foster, live together, eat together, and constantly work together to make art. Some of that art turns into Grood songs, some into Kasey’s theater career or Charlie’s other 15 bands, and the leftover is fart jokes. Grood can do three things very well: one, they are always making new music and posting it to their sound cloud page, always free. Two, they work those songs into a 5 piece live band frenzy that sounds like a hot knife. Three, once a year they make the ACTual show, a living, jumping, colorful, theatrical version of Grood songs on stage, usually in December and almost definitely at their home court venue, Martyrs.
One thing to notice about the 3 things grood does well: it’s all content driven. Never will grood release something that it didn’t slave over for hours or days or years, and always will the content be filled to the brim with heart juice. Blood. Grood plans to continue this tradition for years to come, won’t stop cuz we can’t stop.
Fun pronunciation note: Grood is pronounced like good. Fun origin note: Grood = Good + Great.

Planetary Collective is a group of filmmakers, visual media creatives, and thinkers who work with cosmologists, ecologists, and philosophers to explore some of the big questions facing our planet at this time.
PC had aspirations of raising funds to complete and release a full-length documentary called Continuum. The film is about the emerging worldview of interdependence of our planet and weaves together perspectives and ideas from some of the key theorists and thinkers in the fields of cosmology, environmentalism, sustainability, social theory, anthropology, and systems dynamics, telling the story of where we have come from, where we are now, and the possibilities for our future.
The team approached Canvas with an idea of hosting a Chicago based release party for their KickStarter campaign to raise money to pay for editing and the remaining shooting needed to complete their Continuum film.
Canvas worked with PC to put together a successful release party including a full theater-sized screening of their Continuum trailer, popcorn, space suit clad staff, and staging and PA for Q+A with team members.
